Roman Catholic Bishop. A native of Camaguey, Eduardo Tomas Boza Masvidal received his education at the Lasallian college, the seminary and the University of Havana, and was ordained priest in February 1944. After briefly serving as vicar co-operator of the parish of San Salvador of El Cerro, he was professor at the seminary of Havana and parish priest of San Luis de Madruga and successively of Nuestra Señora de la Caridad of Havana. The first Cuban to become rector of St. Thomas of Villanova University in 1959, Pope John XXIII appointed him auxiliary for the archdiocese of San Cristobal de la Habana, receiving his episcopal consecration with the titular see of Vinda in May 1960. An outspoken critic of the Castro regime, Boza was exiled from Cuba along with 131 other members of the clergy by Fidel Castro in September 1962. Resigning his office the following year, he was named vicar general of Los Teques in Venezuela in 1972, which office he served until his death due to complications from pneumonia. To this day, he remains one of the most beloved figures of the Cuban exiled community. The diocese of Los Teques has since introduced the cause for his beatification.
