3rd Iceland President. He served as the third President of the Republic of Iceland from August 1, 1968 to August 1, 1980. He graduated in archaeology from the University of Copehagen in Denmark and later taught at the University of Iceland. He became a curator of the National Museum of Iceland in 1945 and remained in this position until 1968 when he decided to enter the presidential election. From 1966 to 1968 he hosted a series of educational television programs on the Icelandic National Television (RUV). These programs made him popular and well respected among the populace and he decided to run as an independent candidate for president in 1968. He was elected president and remained in office until retiring in 1980 (after being re-elected in 1972 and 1976). After leaving office in 1980, he went back to his work in academics. He passed away after heart surgery.
