Composer. Born during the final years of the Qing Dynasty, he attended Tsinghau College, and Oberlin College in the United States where he majored in psychology. In 1928, he continued his education at Yale University where he transitioned over to the study of western music. He composed the first Chinese large scale orchestral work "In Memoriam." Returning to China in 1929, he taught at the National Music College at the University of Shanghai as well as other music schools. He went on to establish the Shanghai Orchestra - the first all Chinese orchestra. His other works include "Philosophical Song," "Flowers in the Mist," and "Plum Blossoms in the Snow," as well as the national flag anthem for the Republic of China.
