British Army Officer, Politician. He was born at 4 Whitehall Gardens in London, his father being of Huguenot descent and his mother of Scottish, and was educated at Eton and Christ Church, Oxford, which he represented at tennis, lawn tennis and racquets. In 1915, he joined the West Kent Yeomanry, transferring the following year to the 1st. Life Guards. In October 1917, he was awarded the Military Cross, following the Battle of Poelcappelle, four miles North East of Ypres. After the Armistice, he represented Great Britain at the Supreme War Conference at Versailles, then served on the British staff in Siberia. In 1923, he contested the parliamentary election at Chippenham in Wiltshire, but was defeated by Alfred Bonwick (Liberal); however, he succeeded the following year, and continued to represent Chippenham until his death. From 1924 to 1926, he served as the Parliamentary Private Secretary to the Board of Trade. During this period, he found the time to become the British Amateur Squash Champion in 1925, 1927, 1929 and 1930. In 1940, he was appointed as the political liaison officer to General Sikorski, the Prime Minister of Poland; and, in May 1943, accompanied the General to the Middle East to see the Polish forces there. On their return to England, they paused in Gibraltar where, on the last day of his life, Cazalet played squash with the actor, Anthony Quayle, who was then serving as the Military Assistant to the Governor of Gibraltar. The Liberator bomber, AL523, carrying them back to London took off at 11.00 that evening, but crashed on take-off. All on board were killed, including General Sikorski, his daughter, and Cazalet's fellow Conservative M.P. John Whiteley, except the pilot, a Czech named Eduard Prchal. Cazalet's body was found on July 6th., still strapped into his seat, and he was buried six days after that. He had never married, but his godchildren included the future actress, Elizabeth Taylor.
