Add PhotosThe Santiago Cemetery, among the oldest in Saltillo and the northern region of Mexico, was founded in 1899, accommodating more than 15,500 graves, with estimates suggesting that over 50,000 individuals have been interred.
Upon the establishment of this cemetery, the mayor of Saltillo, Francisco Rodríguez González, decided, starting in September of that year, to permanently close the Principal Cemetery to pave the way for the Santiago Cemetery.
Originally conceived as a private facility, the creation of this site aimed to address the increasing need for burial space for the inhabitants of Saltillo during that period. Initially intended to be private, San Esteban, founded in 1884, was designated for the population from lower-income sectors. However, over the years, it also began to receive the deceased from all socio-economic spheres.
At the heart of the cemetery stands the Rotunda of Illustrious Persons, established in 1910, where the remains of distinguished personalities from Coahuila rest.
Similarly, in 1944, the Rotunda of the Revolutionaries was erected by the governor of Coahuila, General Benecio López Padilla. This section is dedicated to the military and civilians who participated in the armed movement of 1910.
At present, the cemetery exclusively offers services to individuals with plot titles or ownership.
