On the Côte de la Montagne, below Montmorency Park, there is a small, rather unique park. This is the first cemetery in Quebec City and in Canada. It was Champlain who opened it in 1609 to bury the first settlers of the colony. It appears on the map drawn by Champlain in 1613.
It was there that, on March 24, 1616, the first proper religious funeral took place, that of Michel Colin. The deceased were buried there until 1691 when burials were prohibited there. We then begin the transfer of the remains to the new Sainte-Anne cemetery (located between Notre-Dame-de-Québec cathedral and the Seminary, near the current holy door). In 1722, the Côte de la Montagne cemetery was considered empty.
Today, a large cross and two commemorative plaques recall this place of memory.
