The Leuty Cemetery is the ancestral burial ground of the Leuty family, who were one of the pioneering families of Rhea County. When the Tennessee Valley Authority system of nine dams caused water from the Tennessee River to rise in 1941 above the Watts Bar Dam, this 19th century cemetery was left on what became a small island in a large man-made lake. Today, it is called "Cemetery Island." The only way you can reach this remote island is by boat. In 2014 the cemetery was found to be overgrown with vines, snakes and insects. There are dozens of sunken grave sites. Of the four grave markers found on the island, none have a readable inscription.
