MRS. SESSIONS DEAD

Mrs. Lucia S.D. Sessions, a well known writer, died yesterday at her home, 415 North Bonnie Brae street. Mrs. Sessions won wide notice in 1850 when she graduated from Oberlin college, being the first negro girl to graduate from a college in the United States. She had resided in Los Angeles the past seven years and was 78 years old. She is survived by one daughter, Miss Florence N. Day. Funeral services will be held Monday at 10 a.m., at the residence, Rev. F.J. Peck to officiate. Burial will be in Rosedale cemetery.Also known as Lucy Day (First Husband , William Howard Day) and Lucy Sessions ( Second Husband Levi Sessions)

Lucy Stanton was the first African American female black female to complete a 4 year course at a college or university . She completed the literary course at Oberlin College in 1850. In 1849 she was elected president of the school' Ladies Literary Society and her commencement speech was a moving appeal for anti slavery. She was an active abolitionist. Her first husband, William Howard Day, edited an abolitionist newspaper In Cleveland, Ohio, and she wrote a tory on slavery for her husband's newspaper in 1854. In 1856 they left. for Canada to teach fugitive slaves, but in 1858 her husband left for business in England and requested a divorce. In 1866 she was sponsered by the Cleveland Freedmans Association to teach in Georgia (later in Mississippi). She met her second husband, Levi Sessions, in Mississippi in 1878. The couple then moved to Tennessee, where she was President of the local Christian Temperance Union. They later moved to Los Angeles, California
