There is some uncertainty about Mary's DOB. The following lists known facts and a conclusion about her DOB.

Fact: 1860 Pike Twp, Stark, Ohio census- Family unit was John Stanatz (67, farmer), wife Mary (56) and children; Hiram (23) and Harriet (19).

Her husband John Steinmetz died in 1869.

Fact: 1870 Pike Twp, Stark, Ohio census- Widow Mary Steinmetz (76) is living with son Hiram Stamets (33, farmer), his wife Caroline (24) and their son; John Stamets (1).

Fact: 1880 Pike Twp, Stark, Ohio census- Widow Mary Steinmetz (84) was living with her son Hiram Stamets (42, farmer), her daughter-in-law Caroline (32) and their children; John (11), Mary (9), James (7), Hiram W (5), Dennison (3) and Sarah (10 mo). Mary is listed as Hiram's mother.

Fact: Obituary, The Ohio Repository's April 15, 1882 issue, page 5, col 1 reads "Mrs. Mary Stinemetz, an old lady residing in Pike township, died Friday afternoon [April 14, 1882] and will be buried from the family residence Sunday morning at 10 o'clock".

Uncertainty: Mary's gravestone inscription appears to read "Mary. Wife of John Steinmetz. Born Oct 14 1786. Aged 86 yr 6 m". Her DOD would calculate as 1873. However, Mary was alive and living with her son, Hiram, after that date in the 1880 census. In 1880, her age was listed as 84, making her DOB about 1796.

Assumption: The DOB on her marker was either errant or misread due to erosion and damage. Her DOB is assumed to be Oct 14 1795, instead of Oct 14 1786. This DOB aligns with ages given in the 1870 and 1880 censuses. An age of 86y 6m places her DOD near the obituary's stated April 14, 1882.
