Ida Marie Unger, 99, operating room nurse

Ida Marie Unger, a former operating room nurse and longtime resident of Federalsburg, died Monday at Easton Memorial Hospital from complications from a fall. She was 99.

Mrs. Unger, who had worked as an operating room nurse at University of Maryland Hospital during the 1920s, returned to her native Federalsburg in the late '20s to care for her ill mother. She spent the remaining years of her life in the Caroline County town, where she was active in the Garden Club of Caroline County and the Woman's Club of Federalsburg, of which she was a president. She also was a member of the Rotary Club's Rotary Anns.

During World War II, she was a Civil Defense aircraft spotter.

Born Ida Marie Nagel, she graduated from high school in Federalsburg. She earned a bachelor's degree in nursing from the University of Maryland School of Nursing in 1923. In 1970, she established the Ida Nagel Unger Scholarship Fund for Nursing Education.

She was married for 67 years to Vernon E. Unger Sr., former manager of Holt Oil Co. and consultant to Tri-Gas Oil Co. He died last year.

At her death, Mrs. Unger was the oldest member of Union United Methodist Church in Federalsburg, where services were held yesterday.

She is survived by a son, Vernon E. Unger Jr. of Auburn, Ala.; a daughter, Barbara Unger Arant of Knoxville; four grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
