Shirley was born on December 25, 1922 in Downs, Kansas. When she was 4, her family moved to Longview, Washington, where she graduated from high school. During World War II, she met Robert "Bob" Kroessin, and they were married in 1942 in Bakersfield, California. With other family members they started a Food Mobile in Longview. Their daughter Karen was born during this time. In 1950, they moved to Prineville, where she traveled throughout central and eastern Oregon teaching women how to use their new electrical appliances.

In 1955, they moved to Lake Oswego, outside of Portland, Oregon, where they started a deli in downtown Portland. Their son Bob was born during this time. Her husband Bob died in 1968. She worked as a secretary in the Lake Grove Presbyterian Church until she married Bonner Robinson in 1971. After he died in 1973, she went back to the church and worked until she retired. Shirley enjoyed traveling with her women friends. In 1994, she re-met Jim Kuhn, whom they had known as young couples in Prineville. They enjoyed 10 years together, including dancing and cruising.
