Vice Admiral, Royal Navy. In 1865 He married Caroline Gertrude Lysley (1835-1879) and had three children. He entered the Navy in 1829, and rose to the rank of Vice Admiral upon retirement in 1881. He served as Lieutenant and commander on the HMS Caradoc, in the Mediterranean. He was promoted for his role as aide-de-camp to Lord Raglan, the British commander during the Battle of the Alma, on 20 September 1854. He took command of the HMS Caradoc, a tender ship to HMS Britannia. This took his ship to the Mediterranean Sea and later to the Black Sea during the Russian War (and bringing the remains of Lord Raglan - British commander of the Crimea, who died there of disentary on 9 July 1955) - back to England. His final command was the HMS Harrier, in the Baltic, during the Russian War, then to the southeast coast of America. He retired in 1881.
