HAROLD EUGENE CLANTON, 81, of NEPTUNE, passed away Saturday, Sept. 1, at the Jersey Shore University Medical Center, Neptune. He was born in Decatur, Ill., and had lived in Neptune since 1961. Harold graduated from Stephen Decatur High School before enlisting in the Army to serve in World War II. He fought in many battles, including the Battle of the Bulge. After his discharge, Harold worked for the U.S. government in the Engineering Department at Fort Monmouth. He served as a committeeman for Boy Scouts Troop 183, which met in Redeemer Lutheran Church, Neptune. He was also a Weeblo leader. Harold had been licensed as a HAM radio operator since 1952 and was very active in many amateur radio clubs, including the Neptune Amateur Radio Club, the Garden State Amateur Radio Club and OMARC. His HAM "call" was WB2CJE. Harold was a life member of the American Legion Post 346 and the Neptune Senior Center. He worked with the Office of Emergency Management in Neptune with RACES and ARES. He was also a member of the QCWA.
He was predeceased by his daughter, Monica Clanton; and his sisters, Patricia Reber and Marilyn McCoy. He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Laura Clanton; his sons, William Clanton Sr. and his wife Mary of Manahawkin, Deputy Fire Chief James Clanton and his wife Beth of Neptune City; his daughters, Veronica Kutz and her husband Lanny of Vineland, Pamela Baker and her husband Frank of Neptune; his brother, Ronald Clanton and his wife Kay of Decatur; his sister, Phyllis Cotterell of Lexington, Ky.; his grandchildren, Timothy Kutz, Amanda Boogaard and her husband Andre, William Clanton Jr. and his wife Natercia, Steven Clanton and his wife Vanessa, Robin Mowery and her husband Stephen, Melissa Clanton, James Clanton, Brian Baker, Galen Baker, Jessica Baker; and his great-grandchildren, Joshua Kutz, Mary Boogaard, Kaela Boogaard, William Clanton III, Steven Clanton Jr., James Mowery, Adam Mowery, Christopher Mowery and Charity Mowery.
Friends and family are invited to call from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. on Thursday at the Ely Funeral Home, 3316 Highway 33, Neptune. A funeral service will be held Friday at the Ely Funeral Home, Neptune, with interment to follow in Brig. Gen. William C. Doyle Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Arneytown.
