Donald O. Weckhorst, 83, of Paxton died at 6:35 a.m. Saturday, June 13, 2015, at Carle Foundation Hospital, Urbana.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, June 16, 2015, at Baier Family Funeral Services, 406 E Pells Street, Paxton. Burial will follow in Glen Cemetery, Paxton with military honors.

Visitation will be from 5-7 p.m. Monday, June 15, at the funeral home.

Don was born February 4, 1932 in Appleton, Minnesota a son of Carl G. and Emma T. Skordahl Weckhorst. He married Lillian “Marie” Doudera April 2, 1955 in Alma. She survives.

Along with his wife, Marie of 60 years, he is survived by three sons, Donald C. (Karen) Weckhorst of Eagle River, Alaska, David G. (Lynn) Weckhorst of Champaign, Dale A. (Patty) Weckhorst of Flower Mound, Texas; seven grandchildren; two great grandchildren; and two sisters, Eleanor Gilbertson of Montevideo, MN and Elizabeth Winquest of Hugo, MN.

He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers.

Don attended grade school in Appleton-Bellingham, MN and graduated from Bellingham High School in 1950. He received an Associate Degree in Liberal Arts from St. Leo University, Winter Park, FL, a degree in Work Center Management from Community College Air Force, Maxwell AFB, Alabama, a Bachelor of Arts degree in Career Occupations and a Masters of Science degree in Technology Education from Eastern Illinois University, Charleston.

He served in the United States Air Force for 30 years retiring as a Chief Master Sergeant, having served stateside and in Japan and Germany. He worked in Civil Service at Chanute Air Force Base for 13 years and was the senior enlisted adviser for General Robertson and General Norma Brown. He also taught a Human Relations class at Parkland College for a number of years.

Don was a member of the Paxton First United Methodist Church, the Rantoul American Legion Post 287, the Rantoul V.F.W. Post 6750, the Air Force Association and member and past president of the Prairie A’s Antique Ford Club.

Don was very proud of his military career, he enjoyed restoring cars especially Model A’s and Ford Mustangs, volunteering at the Octave Chanute Aerospace Museum of which he was instrumental in the development of and writing history books for Chanute. He loved spending time with his family.
