A Civil War veteran, he enlisted and mustered into federal service at Harrisburg February 6, 1865, as a private with Co. C, 24th U.S. Colored Infantry, promoted to corporal August 9, 1865, and honorably discharged with his company October 1, 1865. His older brother Samuel enlisted on the same day and served in the same company.
Some of his children's death certificates claim he was born in Dillsburg, York County, but his military records all say Schuylkill County.
