John Saint Sauveur de Poyen (22 Oct 1819 Merrimac, Essex, Massachusetts - 22 Feb 1880 Pointe-à-Pitre, Guadeloupe) was one of nine children of Joseph Rochmont De Poyen (1767 – 1850) and Sally Elliott (1781 – 1858). On 18 Nov 1843 he married Elizabeth B Kennison (1824 - 1901) daughter of Timothy Kinnison (1796 – 1876) and Abigail Longfellow (1798 – 1864). (Note her surname spelling varies, see also Kennison and Kenison). They had at least six children:

1) Sarah Goodrich Poyen (1846 –) married four times to: William H Sawtell, Elliot Sandford, Elias Milliken and finally William Basset.

2) Emma Josephine Poyen (1852 –) married George W Weymouth (1880 –).

3) Helen Maria Poyen (1856 –) was married in 1881.

4) Abby F Poyen (1858 – 1859), died young.

5) John Saint Sauveur Poyen (1860 – 1943) married Fannie J Huntington (1858 –) lived between Seattle, WA and Phoenix, AZ, was a ship and carriage builder. He was know for his boxing and swimming in Boston. They had one son also named John Saint Sauveur Poyen and a grandson named John Saint Sauveur Poyen.

6) Edward Austin Poyen (1865 – 1902) married Elizabeth Blanche Biddle (1877 – 1875).

John Saint Sauveur de Poyen was a successful entrepreneur. He bought a supply store from his brother-in-law, Stephen Patten (1805 - 1869), husband of his sister Elizabeth Josephine de Poyen (1804 - 1869). He formed a partnership with Herbert Otis Delano, Jr (1847 – 1926) who was husband of his niece, Margaret Saint Sauveur Palmer (1848 – 1912) the daughter of his sister Lucy Maude St Poyen (1825 – 1878) and Charles H Palmer (1819 - 1982). They built carriages with my second great grandfather, John H Baker, Sr (1822 - 1873). John H Baker, Sr's daughter Elizabeth R Baker (1852 - 1925) married Charles Henry Palmer, Jr (1846 - 1914) also son of Lucy Maude St Poyen (1825 – 1878) and Charles H Palmer (1819 - 1982). John Saint Sauveur de Poyen later went into banking and was pivotal in bringing rail service to the area of West Amesbury (now Merrimac), Essex, Massachusetts.

He died of yellow fever while visiting family at Pointe-à-Pitre, Guadeloupe. His remains were returned by ship and buried here.
