Olympic Games Gold Medalist Athlete. As a track athlete and member of the Boston Athletic Association in Boston, Massachusetts, he was part of the United States' Olympic team that competed in the inaugural games in 1896 in Athens, Greece. In those games he won the Gold Medal in the 110 Meter Hurdles competition. Due to others dropping out, the race featured only Tom Curtis and Great Britain's Grantley Goulding, and was an extremely close match, with Curtis winning by a mere 2-inch margin. He was an engineering 1894 graduate of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and served in the Massachusetts National Guard during World War I. Later in life, he published a number of books about the 1896 Olympic Games, with his most popular being 1932's "High Hurdles and White Gloves.”
