Tribute image collage to Albert C. Tyler, silver medalist in the pole vault at the 1896 Athens Olympics, the first Olympiad of the modern era. He was one of four Princeton students who were members of the 13 athlete US Olympic team. One was his cousin Francis A. Lane, who won bronze in the 100m sprint. No medals of silver metal were actually presented to second place finishers. Two medals were presented: A silver metal medal for the first place finalist, and bronze metal medal for the second place finalist. No medals were awarded for 3rd place finishers. The Olympic rings logo did not actually make an appearance until the 1920 Olympic games.

The four Princeton student athletes who participated in the first olympiad of the modern era, the 1896 Athens Olympics. Left-to-right: Francis A. Lane (bronze in the 100 meter sprint), Lane's cousin Albert C. Tyler (silver in the pole vault), Robert Garrett, Jr. (gold in both discus throw and shot put, and silver in both high jump and long jump), and Herbert B. Jamison (silver in the 400m race). There were only thirteen US Olympians at this first modern Olympics, and eleven of them earned a total of 20 medals, including the highest number of gold medals of any country. The total medal count was second only to Greece which enter 169 athletes in the games.
