-------------------------------------
Jakobus Gerhard Reents was born on Jan. 5, 1883, in Oldorf, Germany, the son of John Jacob Reents and Anna Katherine nee-Harms. Shortly after his birth he was baptized into the covenant relation with the triune God in the Lutheran church in Oldorf. There also, on April 11, 1897, he confessed his faith in the triune God and professed his determination to serve Him in the solemn rite of confirmation, his selected memory verse being Psalm 119:9, "Wherewithal shall a young man cleanse his way? By taking heed thereto according to thy Word."
On Nov. 25, 1912, he was united in marriage to Louisa nee-Martens. Very shortly thereafter the young couple migrated to America, where they became American citizens in the early 1920's. They lived on a farm near Nelson, Neb., until their retirement three years ago, at which time they moved to Yorktown, Ia.
Mr. Reents had not been very well and strong during the last year and was more recently confined to a local hospital for two weeks, where late on Tuesday evening he departed this life due to a heart ailment and was carried, as we confidently affirm, to his home in heaven. He had attained the earthly age of 75 years, 9 months and 23 days.
He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Louise Reents of Yorktown; three sons, Hans, who lives north of Yorktown; Frederick of Hastings, Nebr.; and Helmuth of Millard, Nebr.; one daughter, Mrs. Lena Sollman of Blanchard, Ia. Another daughter, Clara, died in 1927. He is also survived by 13 grandchildren; by one brother, Diedrich, and two sisters, Marie and Theda Reents, all of Germany.
The funeral service was held on Friday, Oct. 31. A prayer service at 1:15 at the Foster-Harmon-Williams Mortuary in Clarinda was followed by services at 2 at St. Paul's Lutheran church (sic) in Yorktown, the Rev. Sieg H. Schroeder, pastor, officiated. Music was by the mens chorus with Richard Ulmer at the organ. The bearers were Rudolph Eichhorst, Martin Herzberg, Otto Grother, John Nothwehr, Fred Huseman and Paul Mueller. Ushers were Darrel Sump and Rudolph Gerdts. The flowers were cared for by Mrs. Northwehr and Mrs. Stump. Interment was in the Summit cemetery (sic) north of Yorktown.
