R. Grant Athay

R. Grant Athay succumbed to Alzheimer’s on June 10th 2015 in Provo Utah. Grant was born in humble circumstances in Smithfield, Cache Valley Utah in 1923. He trained and served as a meteorologist in World War II and went on to become a well-known and influential solar astronomer at the National Center for Atmospheric Research in Boulder Colorado.

Grant also served for a time as the chairman of the Physics department at the University of Utah. Grant served on many National Science Foundation committees, published scientific books and articles and received awards including the Talmadge Award from BYU. He also wrote articles for LDS church publications and chapters in several books on science and religion. Grant served as branch president, bishop, and councilor in the Colorado Nebraska mission presidency. Grant traveled extensively with this work. He and his wife Twila attended an historic scientific conference in the Kremlin in 1958. He also traveled to many exotic locations to observe solar eclipses.

Grant was a dedicated fly fisherman, an old school skier, a wilderness camper and elk hunter, and a gifted white water rafter. He built houses and churches and barns and dining room tables and sewed vests and jackets and sleeping bags. Grant married Twila Jensen in the Mesa Temple in 1945 and they raised five children. In April Grant and Twila celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary. Grant‘s father was ill during his childhood, so he was particularly sensitive to the needs of young people from troubled homes. He will be remembered for his loving smile, his keen observations, his strong will, his endless energy, and his absolute dedication to what he believed to be right.

Grant was preceded in death by a daughter Carol (Craig) and is survived by his wife Twila, their children Russell (Janet), Luann (Kim), Darrell (Ruth), and Renee, 16 grandchildren and 22 great grandchildren. He was 91.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, June 20, 2015 – 12 Noon in the Midway LDS Stake Center, 165 N. Center St., Midway Utah. There will be a viewing on Saturday from 10:00-11:30 AM prior to the services at the LDS Church. Interment will follow the services in the Midway City Cemetery.
